I’ve hiked using a number of different gas cartridges, but always because I’d run out of the MSR Isopro gas. So why the MSR Isopro gas over other brands?

Why MSR Isopro?

This particular gas has been developed to work best with MSR stoves. The MSR Pocket Rocket 2 stove is brilliant, but any other gas just doesn’t work as long, the constancy of the burn rate is nowhere near as good with other brands and the fuel lasts so much longer too.

What’s there not to like?

I’ve taken this stove gas on all of my overnight hikes including the Rota Vicentina and the Pacific Crest Trail, and the only issue I have with the MSR Isopro gas cartridge is the fact that the bottles rust so quickly and if you’re using the Pocket Rocket stove, you’ll want to keep the gas bottle inside the aluminium pot, making the pot rusty. I’d advise keeping the gas inside a Ziploc bag when not in use and then placing it inside the pot before stowing away your stove kit.

Value for money

At just around the £5 mark this is a reasonable price for a quality stove gas. Other brands do come cheaper though.
