Review

Let’s get cooking with the MSR Pocket Rocket 2 stove set. Complete with stove, aluminium pot, aluminium grabber, gas, draining lid and drawstring bag, it’s an instant setup in one purchase.

Why MSR Pocket Rocket 2?

I was looking for a complete solution to a stove set which was compact and durable. It had to have a clean and efficient burn which was easy to use. The MSR Pocket Rocket 2 ticked all those boxes.

How well does it work?

It’s a very efficient burn for a naked flame design and copes well in the wind. The MSR Isopro gas has worked best with this stove, giving a more consistent burn rate throughout the life of the cartridge. I found the grabbers to be a bit useless and I was unable to fit the lighter inside the pot with them so I ditched the grabbers and just use the grip on the pot.

What happened to the grip?

On the Pacific Crest Trail I put the pot on the large gas hob in one of the cabins at Mt Laguna Lodge and the flames crept up the sides of the pot. That said, the grip didn’t melt, instead, it turned to a powder which is a very good safety feature of the material.

What do you use it for?

I primarily use it for boiling water and then rehydrate my food with that, it’s not often I’ll cook something in the pot. You can do so, but I prefer not to have so much mess and wash out my Ziploc bags when I get into town.

Value for money

At £70 for the set, you’re getting a lot of high-quality gear and a complete cook kit without needing to look much further. It’s a big price tag, but this stove has seen me well for years now. Good investment.
