keep the bugs, sun, dust and heat off while hiking in comfort with the Rohan Expedition bug repellent shirt. I’ve used it on all of my hikes from the South Downs Way to the Pacific Crest Trail, so here’s my full review.

Why the Rohan Expedition shirt?

After watching some Andrew Skurker videos on clothing I learned that a woven polyester shirt is the one to go for when it comes to keeping biting insects off. I also knew that permethrin was a very good insect repellent too so when I went Googling I came across the Rohan Expedition and decided to go into a store and try it on. I was sold.

How did it do?

Usually, hiking shirts are quite uncomfortable on the skin, but the Expedition was surprisingly comfy and it was the perfect fit for my (18″ torso, 37″ chest) frame. The fabric is softer than others on the market and the quality of the build is superb. The stitching is very well done and all of the pockets, tabs, buttons and cuffs were well-positioned and considered carefully. While wearing it on my walks it was surprisingly cool and any sweat quickly dried off. On the w3k in midge season it kept them off successfully efficiently.

Why did you replace it once?

I very quickly learned that the materials on this shirt don’t cope well under a hot iron. I ended up with a shirt full of holes!

Value for money

It’s on the pricy side, now at £64 on the Rohan site, when I bought the Expedition shirt it was £70. So it’s an investment for sure, but so long as you don’t iron it, it’ll last you thousands of miles and keep you safe as well. Not bad.
