Stay warm at a cheap price with the Trespass Rustler down puffy jacket. I used this jacket on all of my winter walks as an extra layer. It was my primary insulated jacket for a while, so why the Rustler?

Why the Trespass Rustler?

The price is the most obvious reason, at just £40 in Trespass it was an absolute bargain. Before that, I used the North Ridge Hybrid Spirit which was much better quality and a bit more water-resistant, but sadly I lost it and was never able to find it, so I went and picked up the best deal possible.

How did it do?

While it’s quite warm when clean and dry, the smallest bit of moisture in the air turns this jacket into a floppy, smelly mess which has no warmth at all. It’s important to keep down insulated jackets dry, but the Trespass Rustler picked up the slightest bit of moisture. In terms of build quality it’s fairly well put together, but with lots of drafty holes in the stitching of the baffles make it loose insulation. I also had to return the medium and choose a small as the medium was far too large for my (37″ chest, 18″ torso) frame.

Why don’t you use it now?

I knew I wanted a higher performance jacket which wasn’t down so upgraded to a Patagonia Micropuff hoodie which works very well for its weight and is synthetic so deals with humidity and moisture much more efficiently. I still use the Rustler as an extra layer on my cold winter walks though.

Value for money

£40 for a down puffy jacket is a fantastic entry price for those looking for a cheap solution and it won’t let you down for that money. The quality of the build and how ethically sourced the down used is might beg for questions. For saving pennies though, it’s a great deal.
