Keeping anything in your pack clean, dry and safe shouldn’t be expensive. That’s why Ziploc bags are such a popular choice among hikers for an affordable, waterproof solution to the storage of most items in their kit lists.

Why Ziploc?

They’re so cheap and for their weight and price, they’re actually durable and reliable enough to store things in on your thru-hikes. I use mine for my ID, passport and some electronics. But mostly I use them for portioning food for days to come before the next resupply.

But they’re plastic?

They’re not the most durable when compared to Loksak OPsaks but they’re much cheaper. That doesn’t mean you should throw them away after every use. They’re highly washable and reusable and you shouldn’t need to throw away and replace every single one when you resupply in town. I used them on the Rota Vicentina and the Pacific Crest Trail and didn’t throw a single Ziploc bag away and still have them in my kit.

Value for money

Definitely worth the pennies and work well as a cheap storage solution for those on a budget and they’re very waterproof too.
